A native of San Angelo, Texas, Marco Antonio Melendez began his musical career as a member of the world renowned American Boychoir. While attending the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey, Mr. Melendez performed on numerous occasions in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center in New York City. As a member of the American Boychoir, he performed with renowned musical figures such as Dr. James Litton, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Yo-Yo Ma, Andre Previn, Wynton Marsalis, and Kurt Masur. While on tour, he traveled to 31 states and three foreign countries including Bermuda, Germany, and Canada.
As a conductor, educator, and sacred musician, Mr. Melendez has lead choirs, taught seminars, and has been a guest artist for churches and music programs throughout the country. At only fifteen years of age, he was named the music director of the San Angelo Singing Boys of San Angelo, Texas. Two years later, he was implemented as the music director of St. Mark Presbyterian Church, San Angelo. He has founded several choral programs throughout the country as well as a Vocal Music Institute designed to provide young, dedicated vocal musicians an advanced level program in which they can progress in their efforts to becoming young musical scholars. He has been music director of churches throughout Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. As director of music ministries of First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX he led the Sanctuary Choir on a tour to New York City where they performed in Carnegie Hall with world renowned composer/conductor John Rutter. Melendez also served as Adjunct Associate Professor of Music at the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Now in his fifth season as Artistic Director of Milwaukee Children’s Choir, Mr. Melendez has prepared his choirs for performances with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Ballet, American Boychoir, and for several concert tours throughout the Midwest, Eastern, and Western portions of the United States. He recently completed a tour with the choir that included a performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. He is also the founder of the Milwaukee Choral Conference, a program designed to provide conversations between school, religious, and community chorus leaders in order to explore solutions for promoting and preserving the choral arts of today, as well as future generations.
As a clinician, Mr. Melendez has served as the clinician of several choral festivals and honor choirs in Wisconsin, Virginia, and Florida. He has also led workshops at the State Convention of the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association and at the North Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Convention. Recognized as a leader in the field of the adolescent male’s expanding voice, Melendez also serves as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Boychoirs in the North Central Division of the American Choral Director’s Association.
Mr. Melendez received a bachelor of music in sacred music from Westminster Choir College of Rider University and a master of music in vocal pedagogy from Holy Names University.
